Facing the Unthinkable Challenge – Parenting after Child Sexual Abuse

When a child has been sexually abused, parents and family members often feel overwhelmed, isolated, and uncertain of how to cope. This group is designed to provide information and support for non-offending adult family members in a supportive, confidential, and safe environment for discussion and learning.

Topics include:

  1. Myths and facts about child sexual abuse.
  2. The effects of trauma on children, parents, and other family members.
  3. How to talk to children about the abuse.
  4. How to help children heal: restoring their sense of safety, self-esteem and competence.
  5. Support systems: deciding who, when, and how to talk about the abuse.
  6. How to help families heal: learning to trust again, managing and reducing stress, and recognizing your own needs.
  7. Children’s development: understanding and how trauma may affect children’s development.
  8. Prevention: helping children to develop healthy boundaries, and talking about safe touch.
  9. Dealing with the system: police, courts, and therapists.
  10. Positive collective action.
