A Short Poem

So many faces, so many people.
I don’t know them, but they seem to know each other.
They’re smiling and laughing and happy.
They’re brilliant and shining.
I don’t know anyone there, and they don’t know me.
I can see them, but they look straight through me.
If only they could see me how I see me.
Wanting to be with them, be like them, be around them.
But what is it that I see in me?
Do I want to be them or do I want to be me?
Do I want to carry me around like a shell, and let them live inside me?
Would I rather their heart or mine?
I look inside and see my heart beating and realise it’s mine.
