What do I do if I’ve been Sexually Assaulted?
Recent crime:
In a sexual assault matter, any delay in reporting the event may affect a case that may proceed to court.
- Call the police or the NSW Rape Crisis Centre on 1800 424 017 (a state-wide 24 hour telephone and online crisis, support and referral service).
- Call a person you trust for support.
- Do not shower, wash, or change your clothes, so that evidence can be collected.
- As soon as possible go to the nearest hospital emergency room for an examination (rape kit), treatment of any injuries, and screening for possible sexually transmitted diseases.
- Do not be afraid to ask for help or support.
- Remember that you are not at fault and that it is natural to feel angry and ashamed.
- Ask the hospital for referral to support services.
- Note that as a victim of crime, The NSW Charter of Victims Rights applies to you.
In a case where the crime happened some time ago, or a long time ago, it may not be possible to get medical confirmation or evidence to support the complaint. In these cases we suggest you make some notes of when, where, what happened, and any witness contacts you can provide and call the police for an appointment with detectives. It is common for the case to be investigated in the area where the alleged crime occurred, not where the victim now resides.
You may still be able to get support and/or referral from the Rape Crisis Centre (see above) or from Victims Services.
